Gardiner Main Street is committed to finding a highly professional director who believes in the value of shared leadership, and who is willing to take productive risks and seize creative opportunities.  This deliberate and intentional leader must have a positive attitude, demonstrable track record and philosophy of inclusiveness, as well as an exceptional level of patience and openness.

Transferrable skills and a fit with the organization’s principles will be valued over educational attainments or specific experience in community and economic development.  A strong candidate will possess the following attributes and skills:

  • Consistent growth in leadership and management responsibilities
  • Experience with budget development and oversight
  • Volunteer coordination experience
  • Demonstrated ability to juggle multiple deadlines and priorities
  • Professional and/or volunteer experience in the public, non-profit, or private sectors
  • Project development and management experience
  • Fundraising experience
  • Event management experience
  • Strong communications/marketing skills
  • Proven ability to work with stakeholders often with a variety of attitudes and opinions
  • A desire to work in an open-ended and creative work environment
  • Ability to make analytical judgments and confidence to act on them; willingness to take counsel from others and change course with humility
  • A strong ethic for hard work, curiosity, strategic thinking, and adaptability
  • Ability to supervise staff

The following professional experiences are valued, but not required:

  • Executive leadership in a non-profit organization
  • Economic or community development experience
  • Business ownership or management experience
  • Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in business, marketing, non-profit management, public service, or a related field

Gardiner Main Street is a 501(c)3 public benefit corporation, owned by the community and led by a board of directors.  The organization relies on annual funding from the City of Gardiner, receiving the rest of its operating budget from business and personal donations and foundation support.  The mission of the organization is to encourage Gardiner, Maine’s economic and cultural vitality through concentrated efforts of organization, design, promotion, and economic revitalization, while protecting Gardiner’s unique historic character.  This open and inclusive organization is dedicated to strengthening Gardiner as a hub for community, commerce, and culture.  Specifically, Gardiner Main Street has identified key transformation strategies to support economic and community growth including:

  1. Cultivating and creating a strong and accessible arts and craft cultural community including support for Johnson Hall, Artwalk Gardiner, Maine “Makers”, and local artisans.
  2. Connecting and promoting our wellness community and outdoor recreational opportunities.
  3. Expanding our local foods/craft beverage movement and advocating for new and existing businesses.
  4. Positioning Gardiner as a family friendly, safe, walkable, welcoming community.

Though Gardiner Main Street’s focus is on strengthening the geographic center of the community by supporting the historic downtown district, the organization must remain open and accessible to all members of the community and support businesses and individuals throughout the Greater Gardiner area.  Suitable candidates for the executive director position must first and foremost possess the values and commitment adopted by the organization and the community.

This is a salaried position that requires a flexible schedule including evening meetings and occasional weekend commitments.  Salary is competitive with area non-profits of similar size and negotiable based on experience.
